Why You Should Visit Rome in the Fall

Many people take their big Italian vacations during the summer season. After all, the kids are out of school, the days are longer, and many fairs, festivals, and events are happening. You don’t need to hear why planning a summer trip can make a lot of sense.

But if your schedule is flexible, I want to share why you might have an even better experience if you plan to visit Rome in the Fall instead.

If you’ve ever visited Rome at the height of summer, you know: it is often just straight-up sweltering – great news for people who love the summer sun but not so great for those who love a little air conditioning.

When I speak of traveling to Rome in the Fall, I specifically mean the mid-September to mid-November shoulder season. This is when you’ll find the best weather, thinning crowds, and lower prices.

I’ve been traveling to Rome and designing custom itineraries for years, and I absolutely love to book my and my clients’ trips to Rome in the Fall. In my experience, Spring and Fall are, without a doubt, the best times to be in the city.

Here’s why you should consider booking your next Roman holiday this Fall:

Rome Weather in the Fall Is Perfetto

The Roman Forum in the Fall season

As I mentioned, July and August in Italy are quite hot. If my family’s schedule is flexible, it’s not my preference to be out in the sun, standing in line, or crowded up against other sweaty tourists. August is when many Roman citizens close up shop and head out of the city for a summer break in cooler climates. They’re on to something!

But when September comes, the daytime temps start to level out, and the evenings are crisp and cooler. It’s still mostly sunny — just occasional rain — and everything seems to take on a gentler warmth.

In my opinion, late September and October are perfect times to be in Rome when it comes to ideal weather. You’ll get daytime temperatures in the 70s and low 80s, and nights in the 50s and 60s. But even November and into early December is very mild and pleasant.

If you’re looking for fewer crowds and more accommodation choices, things really start to open up in late October/early November. From the Colosseum to the Vatican, you can enjoy major tourist sights with a lot more room around you.

Did I Mention The Light?

Beautiful sunlight hitting a cobblestone street in Rome

There’s hardly a city in the world that does golden hour like Rome in the Fall. The angle of light is softer, and the terra cotta walls take on a honey glow. It really is a photographer’s dream. The long shadows on the cobbled streets make it an ideal time for one of my recommended city walks, and I highly recommend having a gelato in hand (these gelaterias are nearby).

As the leaves start to change, Rome becomes an even more walkable city. The gardens are lush and lovely. Pick any of the many gorgeous piazzas to sip a cup of coffee, get a snack, or just people-watch. If you like to bike, there are plenty of options for exploring major sites like the Appian Way on two wheels.

I like to enjoy a delicious dinner and then join others in the passeggiata — the traditional evening stroll that Romans have been participating in for ages.

Speaking of food…

Food, Food, Food

Produce Market in Rome in the Fall

Italy is a country known for its attention to cuisine, and that includes a reverence for eating locally-grown food in season. Autumn means harvest time, which means there are all kinds of tasty goodness that crops up in Rome in the Fall.

From fresh vegetables to their famous white truffles, marketplaces and restaurants are bursting with comfort and fresh flavors.

Even better, you can plan a day trip to a nearby smaller village and experience a sagra di paese — a small-town festival that’s centered around harvest, activities, and local pride. It’s a perfect way to get a glimpse into more rural life and really take in the majesty of the Lazio countryside.

Don’t Forget The Vino!

What is more autumnal than the annual grape harvests? Vendemmia is when wineries harvest their grapes each year, and villages are alive all over the country with activity, celebrations, and festivals.

Join In On Enjoyable Holidays

Along with the many harvest festivals, there are other holidays that are unique to Italy and are super fun to get in on as a visitor.

For film buffs, the Auditorium Parco della Musica hosts the Roma Film Festival each October.

The perfect weather makes for an excellent opportunity to enjoy outdoor food and antique markets.

If you want to experience a bit of Italy’s transition into winter, don’t miss the All Saints Day on November 1st and the celebration of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th. These are major holidays with lots of festivities, and you’ll start to see the first glimpses of Christmas decorating.

Perfection For Football Fans

If you’re a soccer/football fan, this is definitely the time to visit Rome.

Rome’s two hometown teams, AS Roma and SS Lazio, each have passionate and devoted fans. Both teams play at Stadio Olimpico, Rome’s largest sports arena, which seats up to 70,000 spectators. The energy, enthusiasm, and boisterous competition give a clear window into one of Italy’s most beloved cultural pastimes.
