9 Outstanding Day Trips from Florence
Florence is a breathtaking city known for its magnificent basilicas, iconic cathedral, charming neighborhoods, world-renowned galleries, delicious food, and iconic works of art. Exploring the capital city of Tuscany alone can easily fill several days. However, with several fascinating day trips from Florence available, I highly recommend extending your stay to explore them.
As an itinerary designer specializing in planning independent travel itineraries in Italy, there are multiple day trips from Florence that I like to recommend to my clients based on their interests. I also help them decide if an independent visit or guided tour is the best option to get the most out of their day.
Today, I am sharing some of the most popular day trips so you can choose based on your unique interests, from exploring charming medieval towns to driving through Tuscan landscapes and visiting historical sites.

Cinque Terre: Coastal Paradise

You could spend days exploring the five towns of the Cinque Terre (literally “Five Lands”), but it’s also possible to have a great visit with one full day! Just a few hours by train from Florence, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed area has beguiled visitors for ages with its rugged coastline, pastel-hued villages, and breathtaking views of the Ligurian Sea.
The five main cities in Cinque Terre are: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Depending on the type of experience you want to have, you can hike along scenic coastal trails, sample freshly caught seafood, take a boat ride in the azure waters, or relax on sun-drenched beaches. This is a place bursting with postcard-perfect scenery and laid-back charm, and it’s not hard to see why it’s one of the most popular day trips from Florence.
Cassie’s Tip: If you plan to visit all five towns, prepare for a fast-paced itinerary. You can hire a tour guide to have the transportation and logistics taken care of for you, or I can help you design an independent itinerary. Many of my clients have loved this small group tour, which includes lunch and an easy optional hike through area vineyards.
Pisa: Towering Icon

It seems like no trip to Tuscany would be complete without a visit to the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa. This city’s famous landmark draws visitors from around the world with its gravity-defying tilt and stunning architectural beauty.
You can climb all 294 steps to the top for 360º city views. There’s plenty to explore in the immediate area known as the Campo dei Miracoli (the Field of Miracles): the Duomo and museum, the Camposanto Cemetery and Baptistry — or you can enjoy a stroll through the – surprisingly untouristy – city center. Pisa is full of classy piazzas, outdoor markets, and inviting cafes, making it the perfect destination for a cultural and historic day trip.
Lucca: Renaissance Gem

If you’re looking to escape the crowds of Florence, head to the enchanting city of Lucca. Nestled within ancient Renaissance walls, Lucca exudes old-world charm at every turn. Its cobblestone streets, medieval towers, and verdant gardens all feel like something straight out of a painting.
You can walk or bike (self-guided or guided) along the city’s Renaissance-era ramparts for views of the surrounding countryside, visit exquisite churches or palaces (yes, there are several to choose from), or hang out in one of the many picturesque squares. The tranquil atmosphere makes Lucca the perfect relaxing day trip from bustling Florence.
Siena: Medieval Masterpiece

The effect of being in Siena is palpable. It’s not difficult to imagine you’ve stepped back in time to the medieval era as you are surrounded by stunning Gothic architecture, fun festivals, and rich cultural heritage. Siena truly is a feast for the senses.
Ascend the Torre del Mangia, located in Siena’s gorgeous red-brick square, Il Campo, to start your visit with a panoramic view of the city. Then, explore the narrow streets of the city’s historic center on foot. Don’t miss the impressive Palazzo Pubblico and magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta; they will take your breath away.
Cassie’s Tip: If you love horses and you have more than a day to spend, you’ll definitely want to experience the exhilarating Palio di Siena, a centuries-old horse race held twice a year, July 2nd and August 16th, in the city’s central square. Tickets can be pricey, especially if you want seats, but it’s an event you’ll remember forever.
San Gimignano: Skyline of Towers

Known as the “Town of Fine Towers,” San Gimignano is a picturesque medieval hilltop town famous for its distinctive skyline. It’s a hidden gem, a perfect romantic getaway, and one of the best day trips from Florence.
Just a short drive from Florence, San Gimignano is another town that feels plucked out of time. It has a perfectly preserved historic center, fortified walls, and charming cobblestone streets. You can explore the town’s medieval architecture, sample local specialties such as saffron-infused dishes and Vernaccia wine, or admire the sweeping views.
The views of the Tuscan countryside are spectacular from the tower viewpoint at Rocca e Parco di Montestaffoli (just 33 steps up and free). Or, if you’re short on time or don’t want to climb, the view from the Porta San Matteo bus stop is excellent as well.
Cassie’s Tip: If you’re a gelato fan like I am, don’t miss the award-winning gelato at Gelateria Dondoli. And don’t be shy about going back for seconds, like I did! It’s that good.
Bologna: Capital of the Emilia-Romagna

Because of Italy’s compact nature, it’s even easy to venture even beyond Tuscany and discover the culinary delights of Bologna, the capital of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region.
Like most of these day trips from Florence, Bologna is a quick train ride away. This inviting city is renowned for its rich culinary tradition, food markets, and historic architecture.
You can wander the city’s medieval streets and arcades, visit the iconic Two Towers for great views of the city, or indulge in a foodie adventure at one of Bologna’s many trattorias and osterias. Don’t miss the chance to sample local delicacies such as fresh handmade pasta, creamy mortadella, and savory Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. I’m telling you, your tastebuds will remember this city forever!
Arezzo: Renaissance Marvel

Arezzo is a charming Renaissance city nestled amidst the rolling hills of eastern Tuscany. It has the added benefit of being laid-back and a little off the beaten path. Like many of the other day trips from Florence, this city shines with a well-preserved historic center and winding medieval streets. You can also explore ancient Roman ruins and impressive art collections.
There are some stunning frescoes of Piero della Francesca in the Basilica of San Francesco, and the picturesque Piazza Grande is well worth spending some time in. If you’re there on the first weekend of the month, don’t miss the famous antique market that’s held in the Piazza.
Wine Regions of Brunello & Chianti: Sipping Delight

If you picture the iconic image of the alluring Tuscan countryside, this day trip is that image come to life. It’s a wine lover’s dream journey through those perfect rolling hills, spiked with Italian Cypress trees and blanketed with vineyards that make some of Italy’s most renowned wines.
From the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino in the south to the Chianti Classico in the heart of Tuscany, there’s no shortage of options for the connoisseur and the curious alike to indulge their passion for wine. You can visit both regions in one day, or break them up into two separate day trips if you like.
If you prefer the structure and ease of a tour, there are wonderful guided wine tours where you can visit local wineries, sample exquisite vintages, and learn about the winemaking process from knowledgeable experts. Here are some of my favorites:
- Private Chianti Half-Day Wine Tour from Florence
- Small-Group SuperTuscan Wine Tour from Florence
- Small-Group Val d’Orcia Wine Tour from Florence
The tours, whether private or small-group, have the added convenience of a driver. If I’m designing your itinerary, and you prefer to visit independently, I can help by mapping out the highlights for you to explore at your own pace. Whether you prefer bold reds, crisp whites, or sparkling Prosecco, the Tuscan wine regions are a delight for wine enthusiasts of all stripes.
Rome: The Eternal City
Rome is also accessible from Florence, and you can reach the Eternal City in just a couple of hours via high-speed train.
Speaking as a Certified Travel Expert℠ for Rome, I highly recommend giving Rome at least two full days. However, if you’re pressed for time, it is possible to take in the major highlights in one (busy) day. You’ll leave Florence early and leave Rome late, but I can help you choose, plan, and book an unforgettable day in this gorgeous city!
Which day trips from Florence are right for you?
As someone who has explored the region extensively and helped countless clients discover the wonders of Tuscany, it’s always a thrill to help people plan their day trips from Florence. Each excursion has its own unique appeal and feel, and it’s just so much fun to be a part of that process.
If you’re interested in having a travel expert design a custom itinerary for your independent adventure, I can assist you with booking tickets, arranging transportation, making reservations, and selecting the sights you want to see. Alternatively, I can help you choose the best tour that suits your travel style. The breathtaking destinations in this extraordinary region will make you want to visit again and again.
