However, with several fascinating day trips from Florence available, I highly recommend extending your stay to explore them.

Cinque Terre: Coastal Paradise

You could spend days exploring the five towns of the Cinque Terre (literally “Five Lands”), but it’s also possible to have a great visit with one full day! Just a few hours by train from Florence, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed area has beguiled visitors for ages with its rugged coastline, pastel-hued villages, and breathtaking views of the Ligurian Sea.

The five main cities in Cinque Terre are: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Depending on the type of experience you want to have, you can hike along scenic coastal trails, sample freshly caught seafood, take a boat ride in the azure waters, or relax on sun-drenched beaches. This is a place bursting with postcard-perfect scenery and laid-back charm, and it’s not hard to see why it’s one of the most popular day trips from Florence.

Pisa: Towering Icon

It seems like no trip to Tuscany would be complete without a visit to the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa. This city’s famous landmark draws visitors from around the world with its gravity-defying tilt and stunning architectural beauty.

You can walk or bike (self-guided or guided) along the city’s Renaissance-era ramparts for views of the surrounding countryside, visit exquisite churches or palaces (yes, there are several to choose from), or hang out in one of the many picturesque squares. Ascend the Torre del Mangia, located in Siena’s gorgeous red-brick square, Il Campo, to start your visit with a panoramic view of the city. Then, explore the narrow streets of the city’s historic center on foot. Don’t miss the impressive Palazzo Pubblico and magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta; they will take your breath away.

San Gimignano: Skyline of Towers

Known as the “Town of Fine Towers,” San Gimignano is a picturesque medieval hilltop town famous for its distinctive skyline. It’s a hidden gem, a perfect romantic getaway, and one of the best day trips from Florence.

Just a short drive from Florence, San Gimignano is another town that feels plucked out of time. It has a perfectly preserved historic center, fortified walls, and charming cobblestone streets. You can explore the town’s medieval architecture, sample local specialties such as saffron-infused dishes and Vernaccia wine, or admire the sweeping views.

The views of the Tuscan countryside are spectacular from the tower viewpoint at Rocca e Parco di Montestaffoli (just 33 steps up and free). Or, if you’re short on time or don’t want to climb, the view from the Porta San Matteo bus stop is excellent as well.

Bologna: Capital of the Emilia-Romagna

Because of Italy’s compact nature, it’s even easy to venture even beyond Tuscany and discover the culinary delights of Bologna, the capital of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region.

Like most of these day trips from Florence, Bologna is a quick train ride away. This inviting city is renowned for its rich culinary tradition, food markets, and historic architecture.

You can wander the city’s medieval streets and arcades, visit the iconic Two Towers for great views of the city, or indulge in a foodie adventure at one of Bologna’s many trattorias and osterias. Like many of the other day trips from Florence, this city shines with a well-preserved historic center and winding medieval streets. You can also explore ancient Roman ruins and impressive art collections.

There are some stunning frescoes of Piero della Francesca in the Basilica of San Francesco, and the picturesque Piazza Grande is well worth spending some time in. If you’re there on the first weekend of the month, don’t miss the famous antique market that’s held in the Piazza.

Wine Regions of Brunello & Chianti: Sipping Delight

If you picture the iconic image of the alluring Tuscan countryside, this day trip is that image come to life. It’s a wine lover’s dream journey through those perfect rolling hills, spiked with Italian Cypress trees and blanketed with vineyards that make some of Italy’s most renowned wines.

From the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino in the south to the Chianti Classico in the heart of Tuscany, there’s no shortage of options for the connoisseur and the curious alike to indulge their passion for wine. You can visit both regions in one day, or break them up into two separate day trips if you like.

However, if you’re pressed for time, it is possible to take in the major highlights in one (busy) day.
