5 Travel Tips for What to Wear in Paris in Winter

The winter travel season is in full swing, and many travelers are gearing up for winter adventures. I have been planning a travel itinerary for a family visiting France over Christmas break, and my client posed a fantastic question: What should we wear in Paris in winter to be comfortable but not so casual as to “scream tourist?”

It’s a great question, and it inspired me to share these 5 tips for how to be comfortable, cozy, and stylish during your trip.

Layer Up with Style

My absolute best advice for what to wear in Paris in winter comes down to just two words: wear layers. Temperatures will fluctuate depending on where you are and what you’re doing. It will be a bit chilly outside, with temperatures around 39-45 degrees Fahrenheit, but when actively walking outside, you’ll warm up just by moving.

Keep in mind that the heat is usually on in museums, shops, and restaurants. You’ll want to peel off layers, as needed.

When I’m visiting Paris in the winter, I like to layer with a light long-sleeved shirt, a sweater or cardigan, a stylish scarf (trés Parisian!), and a warm wool or insulated coat.

Embrace Dark and Neutral Colors

If blending in with the locals is important to you, opt for a wardrobe dominated by dark and neutral colors. Black, navy, gray, and beige are your best bets. This timeless palette not only exudes sophistication but also helps you avoid the unmistakable “tourist” tag.

Practical Footwear Matters

When choosing what to wear in Paris in winter, it is essential to carefully consider your footwear in the context of the activities you have planned (there’s a lot to do in winter!). If your itinerary calls for a lot of walking, as it often does in Paris, prioritize comfort when selecting footwear. Stylish yet comfortable shoes or boots with good traction are crucial for navigating sometimes wet and slippery streets.

Jean-ius Move: Tailored or Slim-Fit Jeans

For a casual yet chic look, choose tailored or slim-fit jeans. This style choice seamlessly integrates with the fashion-forward Parisian aesthetic while ensuring you feel comfortable throughout your day.

Avoid Athletic Wear and Logos

To truly immerse yourself in the local vibe, steer clear of athletic wear and clothing adorned with prominent logos or team symbols. This slight adjustment can significantly affect how discerning Parisians perceive you.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Stress too Much

While blending in with the locals can be fun for some, it may induce stress for others. My advice? Don’t stress too much about fitting in. You’ll be surrounded by fellow tourists when sightseeing and we often stand out as tourists even when we try our best to blend in. (I swear the locals have a sixth sense about this – and you can tell they have you pegged when they open with speaking to you in English).
