Taxi, Train, or Driver? How to Get from Heathrow to London

Even though London is a huge city of more than 9.5 million, it’s surprisingly easy to get around. Public transport options abound, and the streets are very walkable (and many are quite lovely). So when you arrive at the airport, you can be assured that there are plenty of reliable ways to get from Heathrow to London proper.

Heathrow Airport lies about 20 miles west of central London. It’s the busiest airport in the UK and is one of the most bustling airports in the world.

If you’re new to UK transportation, or it’s your first time visiting the city, it can be intimidating to try and figure out the best way to get to and from the airport. As a Certified London Travel Expert, I know the city and its options backwards and forwards. And as an Itinerary Designer, I can help you choose the types of transportation that are the best suited for you, your travel companions, and the kind of vacation you want — so from the moment you arrive, you know you’ll be off to a great start.

To help you get a sense of the options, here’s a useful guide to the best ways you can get to your final in-city destination from Heathrow.

Heathrow Express

Two high-speed trains operate from Heathrow to London and back. The Heathrow Express is one of them (and a favorite among my clients). It’s fast, comfortable, and convenient. Trains depart all terminals every 15 minutes. After a long flight, you’ll enjoy the air-conditioned carriages and free WiFi.

The Heathrow Express terminates at Paddington Station, in the heart of London, in just 15 minutes (20 minutes from Terminal 5). Paddington rail station is connected to Paddington Tube station, where you’ll find four Tube lines that can get you closer to where you’re staying in London.

While fares for the Heathrow Express are higher than other options, discounts are available for early booking.

One-Way Cost: Express Class from £5.50 (advanced purchase) to £25 max fare. Business First Class is £32
Family Discount: Kids 15 and under travel free with a paying adult
Frequency: every 15 minutes from all terminals between 5 am and midnight
Time to London: 15-20 minutes
Why it’s great: fast; lots of luggage storage; easy and comfortable
What to watch for: if your final destination is in another part of London, connections to other forms of transportation can involve a lot of walking; last-minute tickets are expensive, book 90 days in advance for your best chance for the £5.50 fare (it goes up steadily over time)

Elizabeth Line (newest Heathrow to London option!)

Elizabeth Line tube sign

A long-awaited and sleek addition to transportation options from Heathrow to central London (and beyond), the Elizabeth Line is a high-frequency, high-speed hybrid commuter rail. Reaching top speeds of 90mph, it runs from the western suburbs, past Heathrow, through central London, and all the way to the eastern suburbs.

The Elizabeth Line is quicker than the Tube to central London, but departures are less frequent. Compared to the Heathrow Express, it is less expensive, the journey is 10-15 minutes longer, and it’s almost as frequent (except if you are traveling to/from Terminal 5, where the Heathrow Express departs more regularly).

One-Way Cost: £12.20 to Paddington Station, £13.30 to Tottenham Court Road – adult fare with Oyster or Contactless (daily cap applies)
Youth Discount One-Way (age 11-15): £0.95
Frequency: About every 15 minutes for Terminals 2 & 3, and 4. Every 30 minutes for Terminal 5, between 5 am to Midnight daily
Time to London: varies depending on your destination — but it’s about 30 minutes from Heathrow to Paddington Station
Why it’s great: fast; access to many different parts of central London; a perfect combo of efficiency and convenience; no advanced booking needed
What to watch for: If speedy travel is your priority, the Heathrow Express is still a bit faster

London Underground (aka. The Tube – Piccadilly Line)

Heathrow Airport has three Tube stations on the Piccadilly Line, serving Terminals 2 & 3, Terminal 4, and Terminal 5. Because Heathrow is such a busy place, these subway trains operate frequently, so it’s super easy to get a seat.

While taking the Tube is cheaper than riding the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth Line, the trip is considerably longer — almost an hour to Piccadilly Circus. Most of my clients prefer a more efficient way of getting from Heathrow to London.

One-Way Cost: £5.60 adult fare with Oyster or Contactless (daily cap applies)
Youth Discount One-Way (age 11-15): £0.95
Frequency: every 5-7 minutes between 5 am and Midnight (24 hours on Friday and Saturday (timetables)
Time to London: 50+ minutes
Why it’s great: budget-friendly option; frequent service
What to watch for: cars are often crowded; not ideal if you have a lot of luggage, or are traveling with small kids or people with mobility issues

Private Driver / Limo Service

Along with the Heathrow Express, hiring a private driver is the most popular option for my clients. It’s slick, convenient, private, and a great bookend for any visit to London.

When you’re traveling, the last thing you want to worry about is how you’re going to get from the airport to your hotel. That’s why a private driver is such a great option – you can relax and know you’re in good hands.

Your driver will meet you in the airport Terminal (holding a sign with your name) and take you directly to your hotel, so there’s no need to worry about navigating the city. They will also help you with your luggage.

Best of all, a private transfer is more reliable than a rail service. They won’t go on strike or have a mechanical delay the day you need them!

One-Way Cost: varies depending on service and destination
Frequency: pre-booked, so you pick the time
Time to London: depends on traffic, but on average about 45-60 minutes
Why it’s great: easy, personal, zero-hassle, Meet-and-Greet service in the Terminal, usually pre-paid with gratuities included
What to watch for: It’s important to know which services are the most reliable — I can help you find a great one — and make sure you have a reservation well in advance!

Taxi

London black cab

Because of the ease of walking straight to the airport taxi stand, taking a taxi from Heathrow to London is understandably a popular choice for many travelers.

Taxis can provide a convenient and comfortable ride. Unlike when taking the Tube or the Heathrow Express, taxis can drop passengers off directly at their hotel, eliminating the need for transfers or additional transportation.

Cab fares to and from Heathrow are metered (not a flat rate). If you’re traveling during rush hour, the price savings may be negligible compared to hiring a private driver in advance. The opposite is also true; when traffic is light, a taxi ride will be fast and less expensive.

Bonus: This would be your first opportunity to ride in a London black cab!

One-Way Cost: £45–£75 on average, depending on your destination, though prices can vary significantly
Frequency: 24/7
Time to London: depends on traffic, but on average about 45-60 minutes
Why it’s great: easy to pick up from the airport taxi stand, if you’re arriving outside of the train times, or you just don’t want to deal with lots of other travelers, this is a great option. Plus, taxis can use the dedicated taxi/bus lanes (Uber can’t).
What to watch for: wait lines and times can be long during peak hours

Uber

If you don’t want the hassle of pre-booking your tickets and are used to using Uber in the States, you’ll be happy to know you can also use the app in London!

There are better options than Uber for traveling from Heathrow, though. Fares are about the same as with a taxi, but they can’t use the faster taxi/bus lanes, and sometimes finding them at the airport is complicated.

One-Way Cost: £45–£75 on average, depending on your destination, though prices can vary significantly depending on times, traffic, destination, and pooling options
Frequency: 24/7
Time to London: depends on traffic, but on average about 45-60 minutes. Note that a taxi could be quicker during rush hours since they can use the taxi/bus lanes
Why it’s great: It’s a familiar option for many US travelers
What to watch for: Be sure you know where you’re supposed to wait to be picked up.

National Express Bus

While most of my clients prefer faster and more predictable forms of transportation from Heathrow to London and back, if you’re okay with crowds and variable travel times, and you want a cool way to take in the city on the way to your hotel — the bus is a good option.

One-Way Cost: from £6 adult fare
Frequency: Varies — between 1-4 coaches every hour, from 4am-10pm
Time to London: Depends on traffic and which Heathrow terminal you’re using; can range anywhere from 40-90 minutes to London Victoria bus station in central London
Why it’s great: Plenty of room for luggage; great way to see London (kids love it!)
What to watch for: They can be quite crowded; peak traffic times can significantly increase travel time
